Home Care Instructions

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

  • Facial swelling and bruising (particularly around the eyes) are normally present after rhinoplasty, but the degree of each varies widely from patient to patient. Do not be concerned if you have more or less swelling than others who have undergone the “same” procedure. Generally swelling starts to minimize by 5-7 days. Recommendations of sleeping in a recline positions for 3-5 days will help minimize the swelling.
  • You will leave the office with gauze taped underneath your nose to help with drainage, you may replace that as needed, extra tape will be provided. It may be removed completely when the drainage has stopped (sometimes up to 48 hours following surgery).
  • You should not try to clean the suture area. You may VERY gently clean the nostril opening using Q-tips moistened with water. Apply a small amount of Aquaphor inside the nostrils and over the suture area to help keep the airway open.
  • You will not be able to wear glasses for 6 weeks following surgery, you may use contacts following the day after surgery if needed. If you have to wear glasses for reading you may suspend your glasses with a piece of tape and our office can show you the proper way if needed.

Pain Management After Surgery

  • You will be prescribed medications based on your health history and current medications. Please take them as prescribed.
  • DO NOT take any aspirin or medication containg aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medications such as Aleve or Advil for 7 days. Other routinely taken medications may be taken as necessary. If aspirin is prescribed by your physician, please discuss the circumstances with Dr. Sanovich. It may be desirable to continue the aspirin.
  • Use a narcotic pain reliever as needed for the first couple of days.

Wound Care For The Surgical Site

  • There will be a nasal splint placed over your nose that is expected to remain there for one week. Please dry and keep the splint as dry as possible over the week period.
  • Keep a thin coating of Aquaphor on the incision site at all times, you will need to apply 3-5 times a day for the first week.
  • You may shower following surgery, just please be mindful of the splint and avoid water running onto the splint.

Activity Level After Surgery

  • Avoid any strenuous physical activity for 1 week.
  • Do not hit or bump your nose. Be careful with animals and small children.
  • Do not sniff, it will aggravate the swelling and the bleeding.
  • Blow your nose very gently, WITHOUT squeezing your nose.
  • DO NOT rub your nose with a Kleenex. Use the drip dressing for drainage if needed.
  • You may return to school or light duty work (non-physical labor) within a week of the surgery or as tolerated per your symptoms.
  • Although you just had surgery, we recommend you do not stay in bed while awake, to minimize the chances of leg clots.
  • Try to transfer to a chair instead and walk throughout the house. Try to be as active as possible.
  • The swelling will worsen over the next 3-4 days after surgery and is expected. The swelling will begin to subside shortly thereafter.

What Follow-Up Care Will I Receive?

  • You should have a scheduled follow-up appointment, which usually occurs 1 week following surgery. Typically, the sutures will be removed at this appointment.
  • You may also call at any time during your recovery if you have any questions or concerns.

When Should I Call My Doctor?

  • If you have difficulty breathing.
  • If you have increased swelling 2-3 days after surgery.
  • If you have difficulty closing your eyes after surgery.
  • If you are unable to urinate.
  • If you have severe pain that is not relieved by medications.
  • If you experience a rash, nausea, vomiting, severe headache, severe constipation, or other unexpected reactions.
  • If you have an oral temperature over 100.5 degrees.
  • If you have a question or concern that must be addressed prior to the follow-up visit.
  • Excessive bleeding. If this does occur, lie down with your head elevated about 30 degrees. Use two sprays of Afrin spray to each nostril. Remain quiet and relaxed for 15-30 minutes. Call our office, if this does not stop the bleeding.
