What to Expect from a Face-Lift Procedure

Why choose a face-lift?

Face-lifts: They’re one of the most effective ways to combat the signs of aging, but they’re often

the most misunderstood. Between the stigma that still surrounds them to the confusion about

what exactly the procedure entails, it’s normal to have questions and apprehensions about this safe

and impressive procedure. Here’s are some common questions and answers patients may have

about face-lift procedures.

What Is a Face-Lift?

You’ve probably heard about them being performed on celebrities and socialites. But what exactly

is a face-lift? Also known as a rhytidectomy, a face-lift is a procedure in which Dr. Sanovich

tightens the skin of the face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, sagging and drooping of the

facial skin.

How Is a Face-Lift Performed?

A face-lift is performed by making an incision in an inconspicuous part of the face, often beginning

by the ears and coming up the other side around the forehead. In some cases, if the procedure

includes the neck, an incision may also be made under the chin.

Next, fat in the face may be repositioned to help “fill out” the face in areas where a sunken

appearance has developed. This traditionally occurs in the cheeks and in the hollows under the

eyes. Tissue is repositioned, and the muscles of the face may be lifted as well. Once this is

complete, excess skin that causes sagging may be removed, and the face is then sewn back up

with stitches.

What Is the Downtime for a Face-Lift?

Though in most cases you can return home the same day as your face-lift procedure, recovery lasts

between two and four weeks. During that time you will be placed under restricted physical activity.

Patients are prescribed medication to make their recovery very comfortable.

What Are the Benefits of a Face-Lift Procedure?

A face-lift procedure is a more permanent way to address the signs of aging in the face such as the

loss of skin elasticity, loss of chin and neck definition, deep creases around the mouth, the loss of

muscle tone in the face, and jowls or double chin.

Why Are Face-Lifts Better than Fillers, Botox or Other Procedures?

The results of a face-lift generally last much longer than other methods of aging-reduction

procedures. With proper care of the skin and genetics, your face-lift results can be expected to last

up to 10 years. But even at the ten-year mark, your face will still appear more youthful than it

would have had you not had the face-lift in the first place. Furthermore, around the 10-year mark,

many patients opt to have a revision face-lift to correct any new signs of aging and to restore the

appearance of their last procedure.
